THE 5 PILLARS OF LEARNING AT ORINDA ACA DEMY 1. ACADEMIC SUCCESS Students will show speaking and listening skills in educational and social settings Discussing, analyzing, and writing about readings demonstrates comprehension Process skills demonstrated through math and science classes Critical thinking skills developed through comparing, contrasting, and discussion A multicultural curriculum fosters empathy and understanding of the world 2. ORGANIZATION Students use Edline to help structure their schoolwork schedules Deadlines will be met, showing an ability to use study skills Students will approach teachers or advisors when they recognize the need for help An organized calendar, book, or binder shows organizational skills at work Portfolio presentations at semester conferences show the skills learned 3. COMMUNICATION Communication skills will be built in many different settings Reading, writing. and artistic interpretations encouraged to show understanding Students progress through curricula in all departments with communication skills Technology is used for producing work and communicating with teachers Involvement in activities allows students to develop communication skills 4. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Annual 10-hour community service project required of students Students participate in school clubs and activities as part of the school community Interaction with peers, teachers, and advisors shows community involvement Students get chances to take advantage of community service activities Portfolio presentations will demonstrate the growth in this area 5.
