Broadly speaking, we can split key communication styles into 4 camps - Reds, Yellows, Greens and Blues - & very easily learn to identify in which a person sits. Think of someone you communicate with regularly at work, perhaps a customer, colleague or manager. Choose someone where there is room to build rapport or reduce conflict & using the diagram below, identify which Colour they are. Agreeable Adapt your approach Wenaturally lean toward communicating with others in the same way that we like to be communicated with ourselves. And THIS is where many of us are missing a trick! Effective communicators are aware of their own communication style and are able to adapt their approach to suit the communication preferences of others. For example, if you are a Red and Iama Yellow,, to achieve the best outcomes: DON'T: come to me all task-focussed and serious, focussing only on objectives and goals DO: have a chat with me first, don't get too formal and give me room tobe enthusiastic and creativeif I want 1. Get to the point quickly 2. Minimise small talk 3. Focus on facts, goals, results & outcomes 4. Avoid too much detail 5.
