U.S. Inches Closer to Gas Independence

A Fine Balance: U.S. Natural Gas Imports Fall as Production Rises NET PIPELINE IMPORTS 2009: 2,260 bcf Pipeline imports in 2009 continued falling from their mid-decade peak and are now at levels last seen at the turn of the millennium. Canada is by far the largest supplier of natural gas to the U.S. (88 percent of total imports) with a small amount coming from Mexico. The U.S. is the world's largest user of natural gas, representing almost a quarter of the total consumed globally in 2009. However, consumption has remained flat in recent years, due to the recession and decreasing industrial use. Meanwhile, domestic production has risen steadily thanks to the discovery of new resources in shale rock and improved extraction techniques such as horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. As a result, natural gas imports to the U.S. in 2009 were lower than they've been since GAS CONSUMPTION 2009: 23,000 bcf 1999. The glut of new gas will likely lead to the U.S. increasing exports of liquefied natural gas, particularly to Europe and Japan. 24000 23000 22000 21000 20000 19000 1800 NET LNG IMPORTS 2009: 419 bcf 17000 CONSUMPTION Liquefied Natural Gas imports in 2009 were off sharply from their 2007 peak.
