1. Compliance Things companies don't do in order to comply with regulation and law, even if doing them would make them more money Compliance with law and regulation Corporate Responsibility In this category are; (1) things companies could legally do and make return, but choose not to, because they are not good for either society or the environment Ethics and role of business in society (2) things that don't make optimum short term returns but companies do them anyway because they contribute to society or the environment and provide return on investment in the ROI & CSV longer term ROI Things companies do that are good for society or the environment and that provide a competitive return on investment. Creating Shared Value (CSV) calls on us to seek more of these investments. 2. In my view, the relative size of this concentric circle is at the core what corporate social responsibility is all about. It is how we act in that space that is sandwiched between what we do because it makes money and what we don't do because it is against the law. 3. Minimal approach Expansive approach to the broader role to the broader role of companies in society (squeeze CSR!) of companies in society (CSR a priority)
