APM-Generated Big Data Boom

APM-GENERATED BIG DATA BOOM A survey of IT professionals in the US and UK has revealed explosive growth in the volume and complexity of performance data being generated by application infrastructures. This torrent of data is stemming from growing IT estates and is compounded by an increase in the frequency and diversity of metrics being collected by monitoring tools. GROWTH IN DATA VOLUME SIZE OF IT ESTATE APM APM DATA DATA 46% doubled or even tripled 26% grew 4 or 5 times -in the last decade. METRICS GROWTH APM tools were part of the huge explosion in metric collection, generating thousands of KPIS per application (vs. dozens for a server). 10101010 01010101 10101010 54% collect between 10 and 30 metrics per component.72% agree they are collecting more metrics per component than a decade ago. FREQUENCY The most prevalent data collection frequency is about 5 minutes. 10 years ago data was collected every 15 min Now 5 min 5 min 5 min Though 23% of respondents collect data every minute or less. GREATER COMPLEXITY IMPACT ON BUSINESS 59% of respondents agreed that going beyond IT silos and correlating Business KPIS and Customer Experience data was key to a complete view of application performance. dy f(x) f1(x) = y1 = DISSATISFACTION F)+8(] =f (x)+g°(x) 77% of respondents cannot effectively correlate business, customer experience, and IT metrics. F6xy2 Tt X 32 dx L(x) =F(a)+f1(a)(x-a) 77% COMPLEXITY Larger companies (>5,000 managed elements) were more likely to be dissatisfied with their cross-silo analytics capability -due, in large part, to the complexity and distributed nature of applications and the siloed nature of organizations supporting them. SO WHAT? MORE DATA IS COLLECTED, BUT NOT ANALYZED This data boom leads to a special use case of the Big Data problem (APM-generated Big Data), where IT and business professionals face a deluge ofperformance data from multiple specialized sources that is impossible to correlate and interpret with traditional APM tools. 300% or about 8 out of 10 of respondents agreed with Gartner's assessment that metric data collection has grown 3o0% or MORE in the last 4 years alone. 400004000 83% 200% 100% or about 9 out of 10 companies are only able to analyze less than half (<50%) the metric data they collect. In fact, 45% analyze less than a quarter of the data. 88% SIMILAR TO BIG DATA, THE SURVEY IDENTIFIED BETTER IT ANALYTICS AS A KEY PART OF THE SOLUTION.
