How an Engine Control Unit (ECU) Affects Car Performance

How an Engine Control Unit (ECU) Affects Car Performance The Engine Control Unit is composed of a PCM (Power-train Control Module), ECM (Engine Control Module), is an apparatus that manages fuel volume, ignition timing and many more. Here are few points how ECM affects car performance Air/Fuel Mixture ECU Engine using fuel injection systems, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) determines the amount of fuel injects on different parts of car. When the throttle is pushed down, it allows more air flow into the engine. If the engine hasn't been warmed up, the ECU will inject slightly more fuel helps to run engine properly until it is sufficiently warmed up. Ignition Timing Every engine needs a spark to start combustion process. ECU can minutely adjust the timing of spark to reduce fuel los. It also control ignition timing settings and adjusts it accordingly. Regulating Idle Speed Many engine systems the ECU mainly controlled the idle speed. In order to properly run an engine, its idle time needs to be control. A sensor monitors the engine RPM. This sensor has an important role for fuel injection, spark events and valve timing. Variable Valve Timing ECU also controlled the Variable Valve Timing. At the top speed these valves are usually opened slightly faster, which helps to optimize airflow into the cylinders. The Modern ECU Modern ECUS use microprocessors to handle the engine's sensor data in real time. The more sophisticated ECU are controlled many units like electronically-controlled automatic transmissions, traction control systems, cruise control, anti-theft systems etc. According to the type of model the software upgrading of ECU helps significant performance boost up.
