How to build a brand

HOW TO BUILD A BRAND {By newhope360 featuring Brook Eddy, Founder & CEO of Bhakti Chai)} newhope Start with inspiration: Brook Eddy travels to northern India to study the Swadhyay devotional 2002 movement, which is based on the principle of Bhakti, or devotion through social action. Brook develops a love for the spicy, aromatic masala chai ubiquitous in this region. Use friends as guinea pigs: Out of a longing for the flavors, colors and smells of India, Brook begins concocting her own blend of masala chai in her home kitchen. The taste inspires cravings beyond belief; friends and neighbors begin raiding Brook's fridge, leaving money on the counter and emptying her home supply. Brook realizes she's stumbled upon something with potential beyond her kitchen. Start locally: Brook loads her car with bottles of Bhakti Chai concentrate and begins delivering them to local cafés. (She hides some in the back of her fridge for herself as well). Word gets out about Bhakti Chai's fresh ginger and spicy masala flavor, and soon Bhakti Chai can be found at coffee shops all over Boulder. 2006 Stand for something: Bhakti Chai launches its first we bsite, and the company grows from a home-spun operation into a viable business. Incorporating the mission of Bhakti (devotion through social action), Brook donates a percentage of her first year's profits to local nonprofits focusing on women, girls and the environment. Take a leap of faith: Brook quits her full-time job to focus on building Bhakti Chai. The first round of investme nt allows Brook to purchase a ginger press, hire two full-time brewers, and begin to focus on sales and business infrastructure. Bhakti Chai retail quarts launch in Whole Foods 2008 Markets in Colorado. Expand slowly: Bhakti Chai becomes available direct-to-customers through company website, and new pockets of Bhakti Chai fans begin springing up across the country. Grow to grow: Bhakti Chai moves into a new 4,500-square-foot brewing facility in 2010 Longmont, Colo., repurposing defunct microbrewery equipment and purchasing a new bottling line. Bhakti Chai wins Best Young Business Award from Naturally Boulder: "a rising star... in business five years or fewer, (which) demonstrate(s) the ability to survive and grow in the competitive world of start-ups."
