The highest average salary remains in the construction sector where health and safety managers are paid between £40,000 and £42,500 at the median, and the lowest in wholesale and retail and transport and logistics where managers are paid a median £32,500 to £34,999. Key Points The median pay increase for practitioners last year was 1%, half the 2% rise for all professions. Around two in five people have had their pay frozen or cut, level with our previous survey. The ninth Health and Safety at Work's annual survey of pay and conditions covers 1035 UK health and safety professionals, a 9% increase on the previous year's poll (full details of fhe sample are here). The main findings are as follows: Freelance consultants' median earnings are pitched well above those for directly employed professionals at a comparable level. More than two-thirds of practitioners say they are happy in their jobs. Half the health and safety practitioners believe they are underpaid. All data was gathered by Health and Safety at Work, the UK's best-selling magazine for health and safety professionals. Adviser Full time A full-time employed health and safety adviser earns a median salary somewhere between £30,000 and £32,499. Their freelance counterpart earns between £35,000 and £37,499. 80% Freelance 100% Manager Full time Health and safety manager working as a consultant earns a median salary between £47,500 and £49,999. Their employed counterpart is paid a lot less, between £37,500 and £39,999 (slightly lower in the public sector). 87% Freelance 100% Pay survey 2014/15 No satisfaction? Exactly half of those questioned say they are underpaid. Five years ago when we asked the same question, the corresponding figure was lower at 46%. For example, fewer than half (47.8%) of those working in the private sector say they are currently underpaid, compared with 56.6% in the public sector. A third (34.1%) of all those polled say the health and safety profession as a whole is underpaid, with two-fifths (44.6%) saying pay is currently sufficient. Only 0.7% regard it as overpaid. A male full time health and safety manager commands a median salary pitched somewhere between £37,500 and £39,999 a year. For the same position, a woman earns between £35,000 and £37,499 a year. 37499 39999 Male IFemale Pay survey 2014/15 Bright future? Generally, health and safety practitioners remain fairly optimistic, with those forecasting that conditions will improve over the coming year outnumbering those who think they will deteriorate by more than two to one. For comparison, we have reproduced the conditions forecast from last year's survey sample.
