A A brief history of eCcommerce The buying and selling of goods and services on the Internet began slowly, but as digital payments became easier, faster and more secure the trend evolved quickly. This year, eCommerce is expected to account for nearly $2 trillion in sales and is growing at 4X the rate of traditional commerce. Let's take a trip through time to witness the exponential growth of eCommerce. 1984 1990 CompuServe launches the first comprehensive electronic commerce service, Electronic Mall, which allowed users to make direct purchases from 110 online merchants.' The first web browser, WorldWideWeb, is created by Tim Berners-Lee.? 1994/ 1995 First Virtual and CyberCash amazon.com ebay were launched as some of the 1995 1995 earliest third-party services for processing online credit card sales. Amazon.com and eBay are founded.5 VeriSign begins to develop digital certificates that verify the authenticity of online businesses, later switching its focus to keeping eCommerce servers encrypted and secure. Groupon secures the largest IPO since Google. In a survey, 40% of males and 33% of females in the 18-34 age group say that they would ideally buy everything online.0 2013 40% 33% 82% 47% VISA CARD 2014 2014 eCommerce is the fastest growing segment in retail, and 82% of the top 100 e-retailers have a mobile app.3 In Q1 2014, 47% of total eCommerce spending in the U.S. involved the use of a Visa product.'5 USERNAME 2014 CONFIRMED VISA Checkout PASSWORD :55,6% Visa Checkout launches and streamlines online purchasing by making an online transaction as quick and simple as the swipe of a card.
