Keep Your Pets Safe this Summer We take you through keeping your dog, cat or horse safe in the heat Horse Heat can cause your horse to feel dehydrated & lethargic - which can lead to heat střess with diarrhoea & colic Top Heat Prevention Tips Turnout your horse only during the cooler hours of the day - I Ppreferably over night or as early as possible during the day Provide shade when outdoors - a run in shed or trees are ideal Ause fans in a barn - but be careful to ensure your horse cannot get hold of the wires or plugs Mist your horse with water at regular intervals ( Make sure your horse has access to plenty of water Use a flysheet to protect your horse from the sun - horses which are white or light coloured can be prone to sunburn (clip your horse to ensure that it's coat is not holding in heat Dog Heat can cause your dog to feel dehydrated & they incur more skin & ear infections in the summer Top Heat Prevention Tips Don't cut long haired dogs short - as this could cause sunburn & apply pet sunblock every few hours - especially on bellies Walk your dog in the shade - before 8am or after 6pm when it is cooler Make sure you take a bottle of water with you when you are out with your dog Don't make your dog run around in the heat, Never leave a dog in the car - even with windows cracked this can be deadly Keep the temperature cool indoors too Cat Heat indoors can cause heatstroke in cats & outside can cause dehydration Top Heat Prevention Tips Make sure your cat has access to plenty of fresh water & if outdoors plenty of shade Limit the amount of time your cat spends outside in the sun - their ears are especially susceptible to sunburn Be aware of stinging insects - your cat won't know what might sting them - ensure their are no nearby nests Be careful when using pesticides in your garden - some poisons could be harmful to your cat Keep outdoor BBQ food away from your cat - these foods are not appropriate for your cat to consume Ensure there is enough air circulation when your cat is indoors We hope you & your pets stay safe now this summer Animal HEALTH COMPANY www.animal-health.co.uk
