What's Under Your Bonnet?

What's Under Your Bonnet? The practical driving test is more than just 'mirror, signal, manoeuvre'. You will also need to identify key parts of the car engine bay in the 'show me, tell me' section of the test. LLLLLLLL The Engine Bay Windscreen Washer Liquid Brake Fluid Engine Coolant Engine Oil Oil Dipstick Oil Dipstick Oil lubricates and cleans the moving parts of the engine. The dipstick measures how much oil you have. Look for a bright yellow or orange handle. Max Check the oil level 1. Pull out dipstick and wipe clean with cloth. 2. Put dipstick back into oilwell and pull out again. 3. Oil level should be between Min and Max levels. Min Engine Coolant A mix of water and anti-freeze that stops the engine from overheating. The coolant tank is semi- transparent and usually has a brightly coloured cap. High Check the engine coolant 1. Make sure engine is cold. 2. Coolant level should be between low and high Low levels. 3. If level is below 'low', add coolant to 'high' marking. Brake Fluid Liquid that transfers energy from pedal to wheels when brakes are applies. Tank is often hidden at the back of the engine, on the driver's side. Max Min Check the brake fluid level 1. Make sure that fluid level is between 'min' and 'max' levels. 2. If level is too low, add the correct grade of brake fluid up to the 'max' level. Windscreen Washer Liquid A special solution that keeps the windscreen clear. The washer reservoir is the smallest of the three tanks shown here. The cap usually has the washer symbol on top. Check the windscreen liquid level 1. Open reservoir lid. 2. Check if level of liquid is to the neck of the washer reservoir. 3. If level is too low, fill to the neck.
