TOP 5 MOTORCYCLE TIPS FOR NEW RIDERS 1 RESPECT THE LEARNING CURVE If you're a newbie, there's no shame in starting out with a smaller secondhand bike in the 250cc range. Anxiety is normal, but it'll only be worse if you're afraid to scrape up a shiny, costly new supersport motorcycle while you're learning the ropes. As you work on your muscle memory, coordination, and riding posture over the coming months, consider adding tank grips to your bike to help your knees hold onto it. RIDE DEFENSIVELY obey speed limits never tailgate or zigzag through lanes avoid riding in the blind spots of other vehicles watch out for turning vehicles always use your headlights and turn signals add adhesive reflectors or reflective tape to your bike for visibility • check weather forecasts to avoid hazardous road condi- tions use your mirrors - and your common sense! most importantly, never ride under the influence 3 SUIT UP & STAY SAFE Above all else, safety gear is super important. While it may be tempting to hop on your bike in shorts and sneakers for a quick trip, you'll regret it if you get into a nasty accident. Always ride with proper attire, including: leather motorcycle jacket helmet with a face shield full-coverage gloves thick pants • boots 4 MAINTENANCE IS MAJOR Aside from keeping your motorcycle clean, you must also check-n'-change the following things regularly: oil coolant • battery • air filters • tire pressure bulbs for headlights, brake lights, and turn signals Give your motorcycle a quick inspection before you ride, each and every time. Keep an eye on the wear of your tire tread, and look out for punctures and cracks as well. 5 PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Even if you've obtained your motorcycle license, you shouldn't try to tackle traffic or tricky turns until you're totally comfortable on your bike. Don't be afraid to practice in parking lots or secluded areas. Need a few more pointers?
