History of the Volkswagen Golf 1974 Golf MK1 1974 - Volkswagen Golf introduced as a replacement for the Beetle. Launched in the US as the Volkswagen Rabbit. 1983 Golf MK2 1983 – Nine years older, and nine years wiser, the Volkswagen Golf Mk2 hit the roads, boasting an extended wheelbase and interior dimensions. Mar Feb 1991 May June Jan Golf MK3 1991- Almost unrecognisable from previous iterations, the Golf Mk3 was applauded for its fresh design and named European Car of the Year twelve months after launch. 1997 Golf MK4 1997 - Subtle changes in appearance saw the Golf Mk4 grow in popularity further, being named the best-selling car in Europe in 2001. 2003 Golf MK5 2003 - Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Golf Mk5 would go on to receive a host of major awards, including Car of the Year titles from both BBC Top Gear and What Car? 2008 Golf MK6 2008 - Scooping the title of World Car of the Year, the Volkswagen Golf Mk6 took production efficiency to new heights, and was the first Golf to feature air conditioning as standard. 2012 Golf MK7 2012 - Debuting at the Paris Motor Show, the Golf Mk7 secured the prestigious double of World and European Car of the Year 2013, with its enhanced features thrilling customers and critics alike.
