A History of The Ford Fiesta

Introducing a timeline of thẹ FORD FIESTA K958 F JN AF61 XNM Lifestyle Ford are celebrating Britain's best loved small car and multiple award winning Ford Fiesta. We have created a timeline that we think captures everything that is great about the Fiesta. From when it was just an idea in 1972 to its birth in 1976, through its 6 generations and a few milestones in-between. Now approaching its 38th year and still as popular as ever, join us on this jourmey of the Ford Flesta and let us rekindle some of your memories of the great little car. 1972 - Fiesta is conceived Developed under the name "Bobcat" approved for design Sept 1972, went into production 1973, started to go on sale end of 1975 (1) and was given the name "Fiesta" by Henry Ford II, to celebrate Ford's new connection with Spain. (2) 1976 First Generation (1976-1983) Mark I Production Ford first estimated 500k fiestas would be produced a year. (3) 1978 - Award Mark 1 fiesta won 1978 design council award. (4) 1976-82 - Pricing First generation 1976 – 1983 cost £1856 for 950cc. (5) 1979 - Milestone Millionth Fiesta built f r worldwide sales. Special sporty version enters Monte Carlo Rally - this would inspire the Fiesta XR2. (6) 1981 - XR2 was born XR2 was born 1981 with its 1.61 engine it became the first 100 mph fiesta. (8) TPU 990X 1982 - Best Selling 1982 Fiesta is the best selling car in its class in Britain & Germany for 6th year running. (7) 1982 - Production Coachbuilders Crayford built Fiesta Fly (Convertible) approx. 150-200 made 83 show as registered. (9) 1983 Second Generation (1983-1989) Mark | Production 1983 Aerodynamic Fiesta MK2 launched, longer and more fuel efficient. 1.31 models get a 5th gear. (10) Diesel Fiesta - 1983 Fiesta 1.6-litre diesel introduced. This overhead-cam, indirect injection engine would become a mainstay of the Ford line-up for more than a decade. (12) Unleaded Fiesta - 1984 1984 first Fiesta to run on lead free (unleaded) petrol. (11) 1987 - Milestone Best sales year in Britain with 158,000 Fiestas sold & CTX continuously variable transmission added to the Fiesta range. (13) 1989 Third Generation (1989-1997) Mark I| Production Fiesta MklI launched with anti-lock brakes and lean-burn engines, in 1.0-litre and 1.1-litre versions. New Fiesta featured a longer and wider body shape and an increased wheelbase. It was available for the first time as a five-door model, augmenting the venerable three-door shape. (14) 1989 - XR21 was born Fiesta XR21 joins the range later in the year with new 1.6-litre twin cam engine and 5-speed gearbox as the range's hot hatch. (17) G902 TYY 1990 - Fiesta RS Turbo Fiesta RS Turbo introduced 1.6 secs quicker to 62mph over the XR2I. (15) TPU 990X 1991 - Fiesta Van Fiesta Courier van introduced. (16) 1991 - Safety Drivers airbag became standard. (18) 1995 Fourth Generation (1995 - 2002) Mark IV Production DID YOU KNOW? Introduction of the new Fiesta MKIV with all-new The mark four Ford Fiesta shared the same production line as the Mazda 121. (21) rounded, aerodynamic shape and oval grille. Available with 1.25-litre, 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre engines, plus a 1.8-litre diesel. Dual airbags standard. (19) 1997- Award Mark 4 introduced to South Africa as a 1.31 Endura went on to win engine of the year SA. (20) P557 YTW 1997- Ford Puma Ford Puma born based on the Fiestas architechture. (22) 1999- Ford Fiesta Facelift Fiesta got a facelift. Fiesta Zetec S unveiled at Frankfurt motor show. (23) 2000- New Engine Fiesta gets 1.8-litre turbodiesel engine. (24) P437 BKN 2002 Fifth Generation (2002-2009) Mark V Production 5th Gen Fiesta launched, first time it was sold in Asia and Australia. 2005 released in India. (25) 2002 - Fiesta Rallye Ford Ford Rallye concept introduced at Birmingham motor show. (28) 3S 2003 - Fiesta ST CUP Fiesta ST Cup introduced to German touring car racing. (26) 2004 - JWRC Flesta JWRC OConcept revealed at the Geneva Motor Show. (27) 2005 - 150BHP Fiesta March 2005 15Obhp Fiesta ST became available in UK dealerships. (29) 2007 - 30th Anniversary Limited edition Fiesta Zetec S 30th Anniversary launched in Radian Yellow with a chequered roof. (31) YW56 XMS YW56 XMS 2007 - Next Generation 6th Gen Fiesta launched as a concept at Frankfurt motorshow called "Ford Verve"in sept 2007, production started in Cologne 2008 then in Valencia 2009. (30) 2008 Sixth Generation (2008-2012) Mark VI Production MKVI Fiesta goes into production in Cologne, Germany, Valencia, Spain and Nanjing, China, with new 1.6-litre Duratec Ti-VCT petrol and sub-100g/km 1.6-litre Duratec diesel engines, Fiesta ECOnetic becomes the UK's most fuel efficient 5-seat family car with 76.3mpg consumption and C02 emissions of 98g/km. (32) 2009- Fiesta in America 7th gen fiesta first one to be sold in North America since 1980 makes debut at LA Auto show. (33) 2010 - Fiesta RS WRC Fiesta RS World Rally Car previevws at the Paris Motor Show. (34) 2011 - Fiesta S1600 Fiesta S1600 special edition debuts most powerful engine yet with 1.6-litre, 134PS Duratec Ti-VCT. (37) AJIO DYO 2011 - Fiesta RS WRC Fiesta RS World Rally Car makes its competitive debut with a clean sweep of the podium at Rally Sweden. (35) 2011 - Milestone Current generation Fiesta achieves production milestone as the one millionth example leaves the production line in Cologne. (36) 2011 - Milestone Fiesta celebrates 35th anniversary by achieving a total of 15 million sales worldwide and benefits from interior and exterior upgrades.
