The Future Is Fuel Efficient

THE FUTURE IS FUEL EFFICIENT The car engine has a long standing and fascinating history. From internal combustion engines, through to the super engines that now grace luxury motors. FACT: The first combustion engine was invented in 1862 by Alphonse Beau de Rochas, but it wasn't until 1876 that German engineer Nikolaus August Otto built the first engine based on de Rochas' principle Alphonse Beau de Rochas Nikolaus August Otto Nowadays, the engine (and by extension the driver) is getting greener. Fuel efficiency is not only benefitting the environment, it's also saving motorists money as fuel prices continue to rise. What Is Fuel Efficiency? Fuel efficiency is the amount of energy produced in the fuel combustion process. Vehicles with good fuel efficiency will use a smaller amount of fuel for the engine to produce energy. How Is It Measured? Fuel efficiency is measured by miles per gallon (MPG) – if you know the MPG value of your vehicle, you can determine if it's eating up your finances. Here's how to work out your MPG for the most accurate result: BBB2I Fill up again, preferably using the same station and pump. Pay attention to how many gallons it takes to fill up the tank. Record the mileage again. Record the Drive until the tank current mileage, before driving away from the garage is less than half full, the longer you go before getting fuel the better Fully fill the tank Now it's time to do the maths: SECOND MILEAGE RESULT MPG FIRST MILEAGE RESULT GALLONS The higher the number of miles, the more fuel efficient your vehicle is! How To Improve Your MPG If your MPG is not as high as you'd like it to be, there are a few steps you can take to improve it. Here are a few tips: SLOW DOWN Drive slower Keep tabs No matter what motor you drive, the faster you go, the more fuel you will consume. Minor changes in your speed can go a long way in saving fuel. Look after your auto and carry out necessary checks regularly - including replacing dirty filters, monitoring tire pressure and keeping the boot empty. Eco-Engines If you want to make more significant changes to your MPG, as well as reduce your CO2 emissions, you may want to consider looking at trading in your fuel guzzler for a 'greener' car. Not only are you being more eco-friendly, but the lower the CO2 emission, the less you have to pay in tax. FACT: In the second quarter of 2013, 1,139 ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEV's) were registered in the UK - the first time the number has exceeded 1,000.
