A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SHOWBOAT ARMAMENT USS NORTH CAROLINA During the war, many Navy ships were painted in vanious pattems of comouflage to break up the outlines of the vessel when viewed from a plane or a submarine. The idea was to make it more difficult to determine the ship's size, speed, distance and direction of travel, As the warprogressed, the North Carolin a gradu ally tookon more and more guns.
