THE IPOD REVOLUTION The world's first commercially available mp3 player, the MPMan F10, was released in May of 1998. It boasted 32MB of storage, enough to hold at least one album, and was a steal at just $250! Three years later, the first iPod hit the market. After that, the rest of the mp3 player market never stood a chance. The first generation iPod was introduced 5GB 1000 songs $399 on October 23, 2001 By the end of 2001, Apple sold 125,000 iPods. By 2005, 11% of American adults owned an iPod. That's 22 million people. By 2010: 225 million iPods have been sold. Microsoft: 1% Touted as an "iPod killer" the Zune was released by Microsoft on November 14, 2006.
