The History of Wearables: From Abacus Rings to Phone-Charging Pants

FROM ABACUS RINGS TO PHONE-CHARGING PANTS: THE HISTORY OF WEARABLES Unlike most boy bands and the Cool Ranch Doritos taco, wearables are not an overnight success story. Some will go down in history as epic fails; others are still used in some form. From abacus rings during the Qing Dynasty to pre-order-only, phone-charging pants, here's a look at where wearables have been - and where they're going. 1660s The Qing Dynasty introduced a ring with a fully functional, 1.2-cm long, 0.7-cm wide abacus 11 1810 10 The first wearable timepiece, a small ladies' pocket watch on a bracelet chain, was made by watchmaker Breguet for the Queen of Naples 5 1896 The first blood pressure cuff was invented by Scipione Riva-Rocci 1961 Mathematicians Edward Thorp and Claude Shannon tested their wearable computer to count cards and cheat at roulette 10 1972 K Keith Taft invented George, a wearable computer used for gaining an advantage in blackjack 1975 The first wrist calculator, the Pulsar Calculator, was released to the public 123456 1981 Apple II to a backpack to control photographic equipment Steve Mann wired 1987 The first digital hearing aids were released to the public by the Nicolet Corporation.
