The History of SONY Formerly the Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation, Sony has come a long way since its founding in post-World War II Japan. Starting out with just $530 in capital and eight employees, the company now has over 162,700 people to its name and is one of the biggest multinational business giants of today. 1946 Sony founded by engineer Massaru Ibuka and physicist Akio Morita in Tokyo, Japan. 1950 Sonilape Soni-Tape, Japan's first magnetite-coated paper-based recording tape, launched.
