The History of Open Source Software

THE HISTORY OF OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE SHARING CODE to push technology to new heights 1955 SHARE Technology - Connections - Rasults IBM USER GROUP SHARE IS FOUNDED TO EXCHANGE PROGRAMMING 1979 1982 60s - 70s INFO AND DISSECT IBM'S OS UNIX 3 400 THE NUMBER OF SITES USING UNIX INCREASED FROM 3 IN 1979 TO 400 IN 1982 UNIVERSITIES LIKE MIT ALONG W/ CORPORATE RESEARCH GROUPS SHARE CODE AS A MEANS OF COOPERATIVE DEVELOPMENT Bell Laboratories UNIX CODE SHARING INCREASED WHEN UNIX WAS DEVELOPED BY BELL USENET WAS INTRODUCED, A PROGRAM THAT LINKED UNIX & THE PROGRAMMING LABORATORIES & INSTALLED AT COLLEGES & RESEARCH COMMUNITY CENTERS FOR FREE THESE INSTITUTIONS AND RESEARCH CENTERS IMPROVED UPON UNIX AND SHARED THEIR CODE WITH OTHERS COOPERATIVE DEVELOPMENT becomes formalized ESF GPL3 Free Software Free as in Freedom Started in 1983 by MIT's Richard Stallman, the Free Software Foundation works to add rules and regulations to cooperative development. Software licensing is introduced. In 1984, the GNU (g-noo) project launches, using a Unix-like program to create free software. To use GNU software, developers had to agree to make their source code freely available as part of a General Public License. (GPL) GNU = "GNU'S Not Unix!" LINUX + OPEN SOURCE become household names Netscape releases the Source code for its web browser as open source. Bruce Perens, leader of Debian, works to create the Open Source Definition after proposing the Debian Social Contract + debian Oracle + Informix port their applications over to Linux. SAP + Sybase do the same before the year's end. Debian Free Software Guidelines to address the confusion of multiple free software apps licensed under multiple entities w/ various rules + regs. The final result is a more flexible licensing process that allows for bundling of free software + proprietary code, • University of Helsinki student Linus Torvalds develops Linux. • Linux version 0.02 is released later in the year under the GNU GPL • The label open source is adopted at a strategy session in Palo Alto, CA • Christine Peterson is credited w/the term. • Linus Torvalds openly accepts the term • The Freeware Summit becomes the Open Source Summit. 1991 1994 1997 - 1998 -1999 • IBM commits to using Linux more. • Since then, Linux has been adopted by Compaq, Dell, Hewlett Packard, + Silicon Graphic. Linux 1.0 is released, after IBM many programmers and users modify it. THE MEANING of "open source" software "OPEN SOURCE" applies to usage and refers to four specific freedoms for users: FREEDOM O The freedom to run the program, for any purpose FREEDOM 1 The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs* FREEDOM 2 The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2). FREEDOM 3 The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits* *Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
