Google TM History of Google Search Google is the world's biggest online search engine with over 3.5 billion searches conducted each day. This infographic shows the growth of Google, its impact on the way we use the internet and how SEO has evolved. 1995 Google was founded in March 1995 as a research project by two Ph.D. students at Stanford University, Larry Page & Sergey Brin. The project was nicknamed "BackRub'. 1996 BackRub's web crawler began to start crawling the web in March 1996. Larry Page & Sergey Brin also created the PageRank algorithm which ranked websites on the importance of highly relevant backlinks. They both believed that a search engine based on PageRank would produce better search results compared to competitor search engines which ranked websites on the number of times a keyword was mentioned on the page. 1997 The domain name google.com was registered in September 1997 moving Google from the old Stanford University subdomain. Google 1998 Google became incorporated at Susan Wojcicki's garage in Menlo Park, California on September 4th 1998. Google At the end of 1998, Google had over 60 million pages in its index. Salon.com praised Google stating that its search results were superior to the competitors at the time, Hotbot & Excite.com and also more innovative than portal websites like Yahoo, Lycos, MSN and AOL. 2000 In October 2000 Google launched AdWords, a text based advertising platform which is associated with search keywords. Keyword bidding started at $.05 per click and were based on price bid as well as click throughs. ogle AdWords 2003 Google leased a number of buildings in Mountain View from Silicon Graphics (SGI), the company has remained there ever since and the complex of buildings has been dubbed the "Googleplex'. In February 2003, Google released the 'Boston' update, a major algorithm update which included frequent index updates. Google then released their 'Cassandra' update which emphasized on link quality, combating shady SEO techniques like hidden & disguised keyword links. The 'Dominic' update was then released which prevented "Googlebombing', the practice of placing irrelevant and also negative anchor text links to popular websites. Google 2004 Google released the 'Fritz' update, this meant that the index was updated every day. A supplemental index was also introduced in 2004 to house content which Google felt didn't quite fit into its main index. This separate index was only searched when no good match was found in the main index. This would help Google fight against duplicate content and also untrustworthy content. The Google 'Florida' update which was introduced the same year focused not just on context, relevancy and appearance of keywords, but the synonyms and vocabulary throughout the page. Google Later in 2004, Austin & Brandy algorithm changes marked a shift towards content analysis in site ranking. 2005 Bagush(a[c]);} XML Sitemaps were introduced in 2005. This allowed webmasters to create and submit an XML file containing URLS with information on how they should be crawled. This tool added an additional method of organically increasing a websites exposure.
