Android was Andy Rubin's nickname because of his fascination with robots

Google officially announces development of the android OS

becomes known as Android's official birthday.

The T-Mobile G1 Launches



The first Android smartphone, sold as HTC Dream outside the USA and parts of Europe.



2009

Motorola Droid released

exclusive to Verizon, this was marketed as an iPhone alternative.



Slide-out keyboard touted as a key advantage over the iPhone.



Sold 525,000 units in the first month

First major update to the Android OS Supported widgets and folders on the homescreen

Improved Android market and universal search, with Native support for Sprint and Verizon

Android 3.0 Honeycomb

developed specifically for tablets, but had little success

Greatly improved 3D rendering and hardware acceleration
