Over 1 billion smartphones shipped last year. These are complex pieces of technology with many components, and the importance of sensors in their design are often underestimated. Sensors had the poten... tial of significant reduction in manufacturing cost with demand and that's exactly what happened with the smart phone trend. Each phone contains more than 10 types of sensors: sensors for touch, acceleration, magnetic readings, proximity, etc. And now that these are cheaper to produce than ever, there's no telling how many seemingly everyday objects they can be incorporated into (not to mention completely new inventions). New products called smart objects which communicate with the user (and with one-another) in an "Internet of things" are appearing rapidly and it's estimated that there will be 30 billion such devices connected to the Internet by 2020.
