Can be used in underwater photography for instance, where red light is removed by the water and so needs to be added to bring out certain colours. Can also be used in landscape photography, and could be used to remove an unwanted plane in the sky for instance. Desaturating can be used to remove colours from an image to eventually make them black and white. Once done, toning may be done in order to add colour to a black and white image in order to make something stand out. An example of this is the red dress in Schindler's List. Sharpening can make the focus of the image stand out more clearly. The process amplifies the light/dark pixels, creating a crisper context. Depth of field changes can allow you to create more or less focus on areas of your image.
