Rainier can be seen from 150 miles away. In April 1934, the Mount Washington Observatory recorded a 231mph wind that remains a world record for any land-based weather station. 29 King's Peak is 12 miles from the nearest road so most parties will camp out just to avoid a gruelling day hike. Every year about 1,000 climbers attempt to reach McKinley's summit; about 500 complete the ascent. Mauna Kea is an active volcano even though the last eruption was approximately 4,600 years ago.
