MoneySupermarket is continuing to improve its Black box insurance comparison service, where drivers car insurance premiums are determined by their overall driving performance. As part of this, we have decided to celebrate some of the most skilled motor racing stars of the past 12 months who should serve as an inspiration for motorists who are considering the black box option. We have therefore asked some of the most respect motorsport bloggers on the internet to vote for their 'Driver of the Year' based on performances over the past 12 months. Find out who made our top ten and who needs to try a little bit harder in 2013 Driver/ Low Nationality Team Notes Highlight Comments Position Point "Hard to think of a race where he hasn't put in a world class performance" (Badger GP) A stunning season in an underwhelming Ferrari won over the judges and allowed the Spaniard to win our Driver of the Year Award. Regularly out performed his machinery and through pure determination and skill achieved results which should not have been possible. Holding back faster cars to win in Aggressive start in Fernando Alonso Japan which backfired "He never gives up" (enterfl.com) ntind Germany "Most complete driver of the year" (silhouet.com) A deserving Triple World Champion. Achieving such a feat at the age of just 25 is a remarkable accomplishment. Early season consistency was key in a less than optimum car, until Newey's latest creation came on song later in the year. "Made superb use of the Red Bull and has been ultra-quick all year"(flseason review.com) "Proved he can battle it out in the middle and can overtake" (flpulse.com) Sebastian Battling drive to win Clumsy incident with Vettel Red Bull the title in Brazil Karthikeyan in Malaysia "When the Red Bull has been quick he's been almost unstoppable." (wtfl.co.uk) "Consistently showed his class" (chicanefl.com) Lewis was back on form in 2012 and Brilliant should Champion had it not been for a catalogue of errors from his McLaren team and the rightfully have been World fighting The whole Lewis Belgian GP weekend "Blindingly quick and awfully unlucky" (richardsfl.com) drives in McLaren Hamilton Canada cars poor reliability. Almost Kimi winning from P11 on the Going down the wrong "Kimi drove his Lotus masterfully" (fljunkie.com) LOTUS F1 TEAM Raikkonen grid in Bahrain way in Brazil "Very smart racecraft and back in the groove quickly" (fl-viewpoint.blogspot.com) "agressive, confident and took advantage of the cars full potential" (flezine.com) The 2013 McLaren driver has been heavily criticised for his spate of late season incidents, but our judges were impressed enough by his three podium finishes to put him in an unexpected 5th place. But were these performances more to do with the car or the driver? Clumsy spin trying to FIS Almost Sergio "still a bit wild" winning in Malaysia pass Hamilton in Japan (theflblogger.com) Perez "The Malysian GP was a sign of things to come" (theflgeek.com) It looked like it was going to be Button's year after a dominant win in the opening round, but lost his way with car set-up midway through. Managed to get back on the pace by Round 10 but had lost too many points. Will be disappointed to be behind his 2013 team-mate Perez on our survey. Being lapped by Hamilton "Up and down season" (theuksports network.com) Jenson Untouchable McLare Button in Belgium in Canada Looked like a title challenger after overtaking Alonso around the outside for the win in Silverstone to add to his Monaco triumph. But things just never seemed to go to plan thereafter as Passing Alonso "In the best car, we would have expected more" (fofassociation.com) Off the Mark pace and error prone in Monza around the Webber Red Bull outside to "A season of two halfs" (talkingaboutfl.com) win in Britain Vettel reasserted his dominance. However, the team fell back as the season developed uninspiring Error ridden "Remains very underrated despite beating Schumacher" (newsonfl.com) Long over due victory in China Nico qualifying sessions in MERCEDESAIM PETRONAS Rosberg Australia "improving" (techmotorsports. blogspot.com) PETRONAS and Rosberg in and Malaysia was uncompetitive machinery. Colliding with "Some great drives, overtakes and qualifying laps." (jackleslief1.blogspot.com) The Hulk often outclassed his highly rated team-mate Di Resta and got the car in positions it frankly didn't deserve to be in; particular in the second half of the year. This hasn't gone unnoticed by our judges. Leading in Brazil convincingly Nico orcoindia Hamilton "Turned his season around to beat highly appluaded teammate Paul Di Resta" (streetscribez.co.uk) Hulkenberg in the SAHARA same race The first half of the year was a disaster and Massa allegedly came close to losing his seat. Fought back strongly though to aide Alonso's title challenge. Felipe 2nd place The first "Maybe a return to form?" (paddocktalk.com) finish in half of Massa Japan the year Santander Receiving a Impressive comeback for the Frenchman who proved that he was more than a match for Raikkonen in terms of outright pace. Podium Over "The King of the Backmarkers" (extremehousewife. blogsport.co.uk) Kamui aggressive first lap in Korea finish Kobayashi at his home race Another year of frustration as he continued to get the maximum out of a car which simply wasn't up to the job. Usual brilliant form in Failing to capitalise on the chaos in Brazil Heikki SATERHAM Kovalainen Monaco Perhaps the biggest shock of this survey is Di Resta's lowly 17th place position. This is despite strong performances in both Bahrain and Singapore. However, our judges don't seem to have been convinced by his potential due to Hulkenberg's superiority. Paul Challenging Poor Corcoindia showing in India for P4 in Di Resta SAHARA Singapore GEISH A solid first full season in the sport in Brilliant qualifying in performance in Bahrain Dismal opening lap at the Daniel which he proved his undoubted speed, particularly in qualifying.
