A picturesque and scenic place (particularly in the summer when the surroundings are lush with Alphine splendour) in an era where most circuits are located close to large cities in emerging overseas markets, the return to the European Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring takes F1 back to its more traditional roots. HISTORY The Austrian Grand Prix made its F1 debut in 1963 with two events held at Zeltweg Airfield before finding a regular home at the notorious Osterreichring between 1970 and 1987. Fast, sweeping and fearsome, the Osterreichring was known for its challenges and was popular amongst drivers, even if many felt a faster F1 had outgrown it towards the end of its tenure. Reconfigured, rebuilt and renamed, the A1-Ring welcomed back F1 with a revised layout between '97 and 'o3 before it fell off the calendar and into disrepair. Purchased by Red Bull in 2008, the venue has been revived and renamed as the Red Bull Ring, the success of its F1 team prompting its return to the F1 calendar in 2014.
