SNOW & TELL Natural Resources Conservation Service WHAT IS SNOTEL? SNOTEL (aka Snow Telemetry) sites are remote, battery-powered stations spread across Western mountains. They automatically measure and transmit information about snow depth, water content, rainfall and air temperature. ( SNOTEL sites transmit data every hour, every day, all year long. Every year, approximately SNOTEL sites are 12+ damaged by curious bears. WHY SNOTEL MATTERS: In much of the West, more than 50-80% of the water supply arrives snow. as SNOTEL information is used by planners in Western states for many purposes.
