2013 Governors, Legislative Session and Control

STATELINE INFOGRAPHIC GOVERNORS AND LEGISLATORS 2013 Governors, Legislative Sessions and Control Democrats made some gains in elections last year, but Republicans control the majority of governorships and legislatures across the country. Republican majorities in 14 states are so strong that there are enough party members to override a gubernatorial veto in each legislative chamber. Democrats have veto-proof majorities in eight states. Overall, 19 states budget for two-year periods, according to the National Conference of State Legislators, but these four are the only ones that also meet biennially. Two governors will be up for election in 2013: Virginia's is term-limited and New Jersey's is running for re-election.
