The UK Government implemented Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (also known as SECR) earlier this year. Businesses need to comply for financial years starting on or after 1 April 2019. The reporting framework is intended to encourage the implementation of energy efficiency measures, enabling businesses to reduce costs, improve productivity, and reduce carbon emissions. Approximately 12,000 large organisations need to report annually on their energy consumption and carbon emissions. 123 SECR applies to three types of organisation that are required to prepare an annual Directors Report under the Companies Act 2006: / Quoted companies of any size / Large unquoted companies (including charities) / Large LLP's The definition of 'large' is a company that in the relevant financial year of the report meets two or more of: Turnover of £36 million or more V Balance Sheet total of £18 million or more / 250 or more employees Public bodies are not required to report under this legislation. Reporting year - your SECR Report should be aligned with your financial year and included in your annual Directors Report for the first year starting on or after 1st April 2019: Financial year First reporting year January - December 1st Jan 2020 to 31st Dec 2020 April - March 1st April 2019 to 31st March 2020 The first SECR reports will need to be published in 2020.
