Different valves are chosen based on the characteristics of the medium flowing through them as well as the way they are controlled, and each valve has a specific role in the brewing process. BALL VALVE As the handle is rotated a ball with a hole in it turns and shuts/opens the valve. Uses: • Gas lines • Carbonation stone • Water line • Thicker mediums (wort) Advantages: • Unobstructed flow • Low pressure drop • Good seal • Durable BUTTERFLY VALVE As the handle is rotated a disc/wafer rotates and shuts/opens the valve. Uses: • Clean-in-place (CIP) line • Blow off arm • Racking arm • Bottom blow out of a tank Advantages: Good hygienic design • Good sealing properties Easily cleaned GLOBE VALVE As the knob is screwed in it moves a plunger down/up and shuts/opens the valve. Uses: • Often used on a water inlet/outlet • Also used in mixing Advantages: • Good flow regulating properties Easy to machine and resurface the seats • Moderate to good valve throttling GATE VALVE As the knob is screwed in it moves a wedge or gate down/up and shuts/opens the valve.
