Tips to Keep Kids Safe in a Car

KEEP KIDS SAFE E IN A CAR TO S4 Motor vehicle injuries are one of the leading causes of death among children today. Kids in a car, if not fastened with a seat belt properly or placed in appropriately sized or properly fitted seat for children, may not just be seriously injured in a car accident but may even die. All busy parents need to learn the art of making compromises. But one area that parents never want to compromise is with the safety of their children. One of the most important areas of focus, as a parent, is to ensure your children remain safe in and around your car. SOME OF THE KEY SAFETY ASPECTS YOU NEED TO BE AWARE OF Always seat children less than 13 years of age in the rear of your car. Use restraints that are an appropriate for the size and age of the child. Never leave children in or around your car unsupervised Correctly buckling children in seats appropriate to their size and age, including booster seats, car seats and with the use of seat belts reduces substantially the risk of fatal injuries. STOP ACCIDENTS Fact check: 12 children under the age of 10 are killed or injured in cars everyday. DO YOU KNOW ? Adult seat belts are not suitable for young children as they do not sit across the right parts of the body of a child. Trying to hold a baby in a car crash at 30mph is akin to lifting 8 bags of cement. Children under 12 who are less than 135cm in height must use an approved child restraint. STEPS TO TAKE IN PROTECTING CHILDREN IN AND AROUND CAR Never leave kids alone in a car. Leaving children alone in a car can be fatal. The temperature inside the car can rise extremely quickly. Children are at a risk of heat stroke and subsequent death. Do not place anything underneath the child in a child seat; if you raise the height of the child, then it is highly likely that the child won't be appropriately protected by the belt in an accident. Only parents or any other adult should fasten or release the safety belt securing the child. Do not teach children how to fasten or release safety belts RISK as this introduces additional risks. SAFETY MEASURES RECOMMENDED FOR BABIES Place a baby in a child seat that is specifically designed and safety approved for infants. In both the front and the rear seats, ensure the child is secured with a three-point seat belt. The baby should not sit in the child seat for prolonged periods as their back muscles have not developed fully. SAFETY MEASURES FOR KIDS AGED BETWEEN 9 MONTHS AND 4 YEARS Children weighing between 9 and 18kg should be placed in child seats in the rear of the car. The child seat must be appropriately secured to the seats of the car in accordance with the seat fastening instructions. SAFETY MEASURES FOR CHILDREN BETWEEN 4 AND 6 YEARS Children of this age ideally should be carried in the rear of the car in an approved child seat. Booster seats may also make children in this age group comfortable if used in the rear of the car. Children who are at least 135cms tall may use the ordinary seat belts of the car providing the seat belts secure the child at the necessary touch points.
