Submarine Hydraulic Systems

VHS Hydraulic Components Complete Mydralik Component Supply SUBMARINE HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS Post-war submarines have changed greatly and have had various enhancements. One of the main differences is that a large variety of submarine devices are now operated by hydraulic power. In early classes of submarines, there was no hydraulic system, and power requirements were met by means of air or electricity. Advantages of Hydraulic Power Some submarines still use alternative sources of power such as hand power, electric power, and pneumatic power. However the main preference is hydraulic power due to the following benefits: Simple but extremely reliable. Light in weight. Very low maintenance. Hydraulic systems are self-lubricated; consequently, there is little wear or corrosion. Hydraulic units are relatively quiet in operation, an important consideration when detection by the enemy must be prevented. Charging the Hydraulic Accumulator The diagram below shows a very basic overview of how a hydraulic accumulator is charged in a submarine.
