Slips, Trips and Falls Occupiers' Liability Slips, trips and falls result in the most common and expensive liability claims against business owners. Introduction Stats Canada 500km 310 miles United States In Canada, over 42,000 workers get injured annually due to fall accidents. (Based on statistics from the Association of VWorker's Compensation Boards of Canada, 2011.) 34% of falls are from a height. 66% of falls happen on the same level resulting from slips and trips. What causes Slips and Trips Slips Wet or oily surfaces, occasional spills, weather hazards, loose rugs/mats, flooring or ground surfaces that do not have the same degree of traction every area. Trips Obstructive view, poor lighting, clutter, wrinkled carpets, uncovered cables, bottom drawers not being closed, uneven steps or walking surfaces. As an Occupier of business premises Take all reasonable precautions in areas like aisles, stairs, ramps, walkways, drive- ways and parking lots are safe for people who are coming and going. The occupier may be held liable for slips, trips or falls that occur on the premises there are hazards that were not taken care of on the property. Simple tips of taking care of the premises in- clude, but are not limited to- Indoors - Always remember to: Make sure the floor is free of hazards and debris. • Keep entrances clean. • Make sure mats are placed safely over wet areas, when the weather permits. (Make sure the mats are flat or else they too could become a hazard) Outdoors - Always remember to: Shovel and salt or sand any icy or snowy areas. • Follow by-laws and/or best practices that determine when snow should be cleared.
