Self Building for a Greener Home

ProAktive www.selfbuildinsure.co.uk SELF BUILDING FOR A GREENER HOME Concrete is used in a wide varity of construction projects from buildings and bridges to cities and even the homes we live in. The production of concrete materials releases a large amount of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. Here is a list of several alternative building materials that can help towards building a greener home. BAMBOO Bamboo is a renewable and locally sourced material. It can be used to provide shelter for post-disaster rebuilding and poor areas. The benefits of bamboo: strong, lightweight, fast growing, low cost and naturally sourced. ASHCRETE Ashcrete is an alternative building material to traditional cement. It uses fly ash, which is a by-product of burning coal. By using fly ash, 97% of the components in concrete can be replaced by recycled materials. STRAW BALES A rapidly renewable source, straw bales are a natural alternative to the building materials which make up the walls of a house. The benefits of using straw bales is that they are affordable, sustainable and provide high levels of insulation. RECYCLED PLASTIC Building materials can be made up of ground, recycled plastic and waste. Not only does this reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it also provides a solution to landfill waste and the effects plastic has on the environment. WOOD Wood is a naturally sourced product. Maintaining forests allows for a diverse habitat for homes to be built naturally. Wood requires much less energy-wasting methods of being processed into construction products than industrial concrete or steel. MYCELIUM Mycelium is a natural yet futuristic and innovative building material. Mycelium is the vegetative part of fungi, consisting of a mass of branching roots, which can be grown around other natural materials. They can also be formed into bricks or other shapes, and then dried to make a strong and lightweight building material.
