COLOR THEORY What does it mean? Color theory has many different definitions. But we cań use it to put a logical meaning to colors in art. What do we feel when we look at a painting that is mostly blue? How about red? Miss Jackie Sir Isaac Newton developed the first circular diagram of colors in 1666. The Color Wheel Primary Colors Secondary Colors Tertiary Colors Primary Colors: Red, yellow and blue In traditional color theory (used in paint and pigments), primary colors are the 3 pigmnent colors that can not **be mixed or formed by any combination of other colors. All other colors are derived from these 3 hues: Secondary Colors: Green, orange and purple These are the colors tormed by mixing the primary colors. Tertlary Colors: Yellow-orange, red- orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue- green a yellow-green These are the colors formed by mixing a primary and a secondary color. That's why the hue iIs a two word name, such as blue-green, red-violet, and yellow- orange. Color Harmony In visual experiences, harmony s something that is pleasing to the eye. It engages the viewer and it creates an inner sense of order, a ba visual experlence. When something is not harmonious, It's etther bortng or chaotic. At one extreme is a visual expertence that Is so bland that the vlewer is not engaged. abalance in t Complementary Color Schemes Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel are considered to be complementary colors (example: red and green)." They usually match well and create serene and comfortable destgns. Analogous color schemes are often tound in nature and are harmontous and pleasing to the eye. In addition to the base color, it uses the two colors adjacent to its complement. MEANING OF COLORS Red is the color of extremes.
