An Overview of Energy From Waste (EFW)
Res RES POWERTHERM CONTRACT SERVICES LTD www.powertherm.co.uk An Overview of Energy From Waste (EFW) Energy from waste (EFW) or waste to energy (W2E) describes the process of utilising waste to generate energy, in the form of electricity or heat. EFW is considered as renewable energy as organic waste is used as a resource to fuel facilities. As the world aims to become carbon neutral and move away from a throw way culture it becomes ever so more important for countries to look at how they deal with waste and utilise it in other ways: as fuel. Without EfW facilities, waste most likely finds its way to landfill. However, in the UK landfill is expected to be at full capacity by 2023, with some areas of the country already at their limit. Landfill is also extremely poisonous for the surrounding communities and environment, and naturally releases dangerous amounts of methane into the atmosphere, contributing significantly to CO2 emissions. BENEFITS OF ENERGY FROM WASTE Reduces CO, and harmful emissions entering the atmosphere Reduces dependency on fossil fuels such as oil: preserving them Diverts waste away from landfill, 2023 which is expected to be at full capacity by 2023 Combats the waste management crisis Produces efficient renewable energy Recovers valuable resources such as metals By products can be recycled into construction materials Contributes to the circular economy Reduce energy costs TYPES OF ENERGY FROM WASTE TECHNOLOGY Combustion/Incineration Gasification Pyrolysis Anaerobic Digestion Landfill Gas Recovery Powertherm Contract Services is a multi-discipline industrial services contractor which creates safer working environments and improves process efficiencies.
