An Overview of Chemical Process in Rusting

CS CONTRACT SERVICES LTD POWERTHERM www.powertherm.co.uk An Overview of Chemical Process in Rusting Oxidation is the loss of electrons, the gain of oxygen or the loss of hydrogen. Reduction is the gain of electrons, the loss of oxygen or the gain of hydrogen. Rusting is an example of oxidation. RUSTING Rusting is an oxidation reaction. Iron reacts with water and oxygen to form hydrated iron (III) oxide, which is seen as rust. This is the word equation for the reaction: iron + water + oxygen = hydrated iron (III) oxide Iron and steel rust when they meet water and oxygen – both are needed for rusting to occur. Below is an example of an experiment. In this the nail does not rust when air (containing oxygen) or water is not present: - il Boiled Water Anhydrous Calcium Chloride Air & Water Water No Air Air No Water Boiling the water removes the oxygen and the layer of oil prevents it from re-entering. Anhydrous calcium chloride removes water vapour from the air. Salt dissolved in water does not cause rusting, but it does speed it - as does acid rain. up Aluminium does not rust or corrode, because its surface is protected by a protective layer of aluminium oxide. This prevents the metal below from meeting air (containing oxygen). Unlike rust, which can flake off the surface of iron and steel objects, the layer of aluminium oxide does not flake off. THE SPACE-RING SYSTEM (SRS) SRS reduces damage to the cladding surface, whilst providing airflow and drainage from within, keeping pipes dry and safe from the threat of CUI. SRS uses support rings transfer the weight load onto the pipe itself, which is considerably stronger than cladding. Strengthening the insulation system preventing seams from buckling and moisture entering the system. RES POWERTHERM C9 CONTRACT SERVICES LTD SPACE-RING SYSTEM In addition, the air space introduced allows free flowing air and the internal surface of the cladding acts as a gutter to keep the pipe and surrounding insulation dry.
