At almost half a million times the size of a regular house, the structure features windows, a door, a gabled roof complete with chimney and walls made of silica membrane. Using an ion beam, the the roof and walls of the house were cut out of an 2 ultra-thin sheet of silica membrane. Cutting only partially into the surface of the sheet caused the membrane to fold itself into the house shape. 4 The ion beam was used again on a less powerful setting to weld the walls and roof together. Finally, the beam was used with a gas injection to make the pattern effect on the roof.
