The second sunday of May is Mother's Day, such is the custom. In 2014 it will be on the 11th of May. Thanks to this institution the day of the mother is always a holiday for everyone except florists, ... who instead have their hands full: spouses and children are hoping to buy the most beautiful flowers. By the way, this holiday is not only celebrated in Germany, but also in many other nations, a few of them also celebrating on the second sunday of May. The origin of Mother's Day The idea came from America at the beginning of the 20th century. There had been efforts for an exchange of experiences and an acknowledgement of the mother, as the waves of the womens rights movement were breaching in Europe. Coincidentally, it was time for more girl power on both sides of the Atlantic. But Mother's Day isn't a political day and doesn't have the same aims as the feminist movement in Europe - and yet there are extraordinary parallels of action to be seen. An idea that took the world by storm In May 1907, Anna Marie Jarvis honored her mother, who had tried to start a movement of mothers to no avail, with a day. It was the sunday after the second year of her death, from which we have our holiday today. Anna Marie Jarvis repeated this day a year later with 500 white cloves, thus the idea of giving flowers on this day was derived. She was very proactive in making Mother's Day into a general holiday, but later renounced it when she saw how commercialized and materialistic it had become. Her original idea had been corrupted, and yet the movement could not be stopped anymore and officially reached Germany in 1923. Classics and surprise presents According to a recent study, 50% of mothers wish for a day with the family. This will not be different in 2014. Creative minds will think of different presents though, be it a day trip, a gift voucher or other surprises. Pralines are always well received and a flower has to be part of it. But remember: a mothers heart is committed all year round, and so should her recognition be.
