MAKE IT RIGHT The Brad Pitt NOLA housing project CONTEXT On August 28, 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. The lower Ninth Ward, one of the city neighborhoods, was completely flooded with the storm surge caused by the breach of the canal leave. 1,300 4,000 PEOPLE DIED HOUSES DESTROYED THE CHALLENGE Movie actor and architecture enthusiast Brad Pitt launched Make it Right, a project that aims to build 150 houses designed by 20 international renowned practices. DESIGN BRIEF Architects faced a set of design challenges, inspired by William McDonough Cradle to Cradle philosophy. Houses must be: %2$ Affordable Safer Sustainable US$ 120-150 per sqf Storm & Flood Resistant Platinum-LEED Certified PROGRESS HOUSES BUILT: 76 150 2$ 40 MILLION RAISED THE HOUSES Shigeru Ban Frank Gehry Kieran Timberlake || Hitoshi Abe Morphosis IMPACT The project has been an urban laboratory for design innovations to withstand hurricane- winds as well as ways to increase sustainability.
