It comes from a basic need to prevent heat loss and keep warm. Here we take a look at some of the different types of historical methods and techniques. Ancient Egypt The Egyptians were some of the first master builders and one of the first civilisations to develop thick stones made of mud to help protect from dessert heat in the day, and help keep temperatures cool, but also provide insulation for when temperatures become cooler at night. Ancient Greece The Greeks were some of the first to explore the use of air gaps in walls to provide insulation. The Romans The Romans were the first to use insulation in piping by coming up with the unusual method of insulating pipes that carried hot water by wrapping them in cork. The Vikings The Vikings used plaster between wooden gaps to stop draughts and cold air entering, and to help insulate their homes. Industrial Revolution Thanks to the rapid rise of steam power there were plenty of pipes that required insulation during the industrial revolution to keep heat contained and protect people from injury.
