The HSE Ladder Inspection Guidelines
eurosafesolutions The HSE Ladder Inspection Guidelines The Health and Safety Executive ( HSE ) offers expert guidance and safety requirements for when using and inspecting temporary and fixed ladders . Here's an overview of what is recommended by the HSE for inspecting the condition of ladders . Conducting a Pre - Use Check Before using any ladder , duty holders must ensure that it is both suitable for the tasks at hand and in a safe condition . Pre - use checks make sure that a ladder is safe to use and are for the immediate benefit of the ladder user . As a general rule , only use ladders that : Have no visible defects Have an up - to - date record of the detailed visual inspections carried out regularly by a competent person ✓ Are suitable for the intended use ✓ Have been maintained and stored in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions Detailed Inspections A detailed inspection should be undertaken by a competent person ( someone who has the necessary skills , knowledge , and experience to identify , assess , and control risks to health and safety ) . These should be undertaken at regular intervals as dictated by the competent person . General guidance is however , that inspections should not exceed a frequency of 12 months which is aligned with other height safety equipment . Equipment should be tagged accordingly and certificated under the provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 ( PUWER ) Should concerns be raised over a ladder's safety , these should be removed from service and an inspection arranged to investigate further . When carrying out an inspection , look for : Twisted , bent or dented stiles Damaged or worn ladder feet Missing or damaged tie rods Cracked , worn , bent or loose rungs Cracked or damaged welded joints , loose rivets or damaged stays eurosafesolutions.co.uk Fixed Ladder Safety Generally formed of steel or aluminium , fixed ladders provide access to places of work , both internally and externally .
