WHAT'S IN A STREET ΝAΜΕ? Do you know the difference between a lane and an avenue? When does a road become a street and what the heck is a wynd? Let's find out... A ROAD STREET Simply, any thoroughfare, route or way that connects two points. A public road in a city, town, or village, typically with houses and buildings on one or both sides. E LANE AVENUE A narrow, sometimes winding, road – especially common in rural areas. A broad road in a town or city, which typically has trees at regular intervals along its sides. WAY DRIVE (UK) A small side street that turns off a road or street. A private road for access to one or a small group of structures, owned by an individual or group. DRIVE (USA) CRESCENT A road defined by a nearby geographical feature – e.g. a mountain or lake. A street or terrace of houses forming an arc. Both ends often meet at the same main road. Cul-de-Sac CLOSE or PLACE:) COURT A residential street without through access for vehicles - i.e a dead end. A residential street without through access for vehicles, that ends in a circle or loop. ALLEY WYND A small pathway between buildings, not always driveable. A narrow street or alley that turns off a main street. Common in Scotland and Wales. ESPLANADE MEWS A road by the sea, sometimes called a promenade. A row of houses that have been converted from stables (or built to look like stables). TERRACE A residential street that follows the top of a slope. FAMOUS EXAMPLES 10 DOWNING STREET SW1 PENNSYLVANIA AVE CITY OF WESTMINSTER A famous street that connects the White House to the Capitol Building. Whilst it is lined by trees within the city, these become more sparse as it transforms into a highway on its way out of the state. A street in London housing the Prime Minister's official residence at number ten. It's not technically a street as it is both private and closed at one end, making it effectively a 'Close'. Nowadays, it's a thriving multicultural market street with a nightlife to match. This road in North London, made famous by The Beatles, was once a simple track leading to Kilburn Priory.
