A very acute form of corrosion, the main cause of CUI comes through water intrusion, mainly via badly designed, fabricated or installed insulation system. HERE WE TAKE A LOOK AT SOME EXAMPLES OF BEST PRACTICE: M0/20 Fabricated Cladding Recessed and Sealed "Picture Frames" Allows for a better quality installation which is water tight, this in turn helps to prevent moisture ingress. Where appropriate, any protrusions through the insulation system should have recessed and sealed picture frames' installed. "Tee's' Pipe Supports & Hangers Where possible tee pieces should be used where pipes connect, with appropriate water shed methods for above and below horizontal pipes and on the top and bottom halves of vertical pipes. Insulation and cladding should be continuous through pipe supports and hangers. With watersheds and deflectors used where necessary. Conical End Caps Flashings & Closure Plates Allows water run-off and should be installed on elbows, flanges and Should be installed where applicable valves. to deflect water intrusion. Standing Seams Cladding Seams Do not use standing seams on vertical end plates. Overlaps should be sufficient and the correct swage for bends and straights. Flanges Drainage holes Where insulation systems terminate due to flanges, conical termination pieces should be installed. Are encouraged at low points of the cladding. Cladding Joints: • For vertical pipes the overlap should always be 'roof tileď'. Vessels & Tanks: • If possible, leave vessel supports exposed to protect vulnerable areas from CUI. • For horizontal pipes seams should be installed on the side, and where possible, protected from the weather. · Ensure there is sufficient space between the vessel and equipment to allow for the correct insulation thickness. · Expansion joints should be used on high service temperature applications and on long horizontal pipes. Explore the use of alternative materials to metal cladding, where there are upward facing protrusions on vessels and items of equipment which would normally just be sealed with mastiC. • Particular attention should be paid to the top heads of vessels to allow for water run-off. Ensure that all tank roof cladding is fitted to prevent water intrusion.
