HOW TO KNOW WHEN A CHILD'S FLU TURNS SERIOUS Most children who get the flu recover without incident, but sometimes the flu can lead to a serious, life-threatening illness. This flu season, at least 53 children across the U.S. have died from flu-related illness. WHO IS MOST AT RISK? Young children and children with existing medical conditions are at the highest risk for developing influenza-related complications. NEWBORNS & TODDLERS YOUNG CHILDREN AGE 2 5 18 I CHILDREN WITH EXISTING MEDICAL CONDITIONS • Cerebral palsy • Heart conditions • Seizures • Asthma Diabetes • Cystic fibrosis WHAT TO WATCH FOR The flu can progress from an innocuous illness to a life-threatening one in as little as 48 hours. * ALL CHILDREN SIGNS OF SERIOUS ILLNESS Fever that persists or recurs Fast or labored breathing NORMAL FLU SYMPTOMS Bluish skin Rash Fever that lasts 3-4 days • Cough that lasts 1-2 weeks • Sore throat • Muscle aches Not eating or drinking • Not waking up or not interacting Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held NEWBORNS & TODDLERS SIGNS OF SERIOUS ILLNESS NORMAL FLU SYMPTOMS • Trouble breathing • Inability to eat • Dehydration • Dark urine • Crying without tears • Fewer wet diapers • Fever that lasts 3-4 days • Cough that lasts 1-2 weeks Sore throat Muscle aches • Nausea & vomiting HOW TO TREAT NORMAL FLU MEDICATE FOR PAIN AND FEVER HYDRATE REST SERIOUS ILLNESS CAUTION! Pregnant women are particularly susceptible to complications from the flu. When caring for a child with the flu, wash your hands frequently. When holding your child, keep their chin on your shoulder so they don't cough on you.
