Res POWERTHERM CONTRACT SERVICES LTD www.powertherm.co.uk CUI: The Impact of Climate and Environmental Factors Corrosion under insulation (CUI) is defined as any type of corrosion that occurs due to a moisture build-up on the external surface of insulated equipment. This build-up can be caused by many different factors, including temperature and the environment. The corrosion itself is most commonly galvanic, chloride, acidic, or alkaline corrosion. If undetected, the results of CUI can lead to the shutdown of a process unit or an entire facility, and in rare cases it may lead to a process safety incident. TEMPERATURE FACTORS Carbon and low-alloy steels operating between -4°C (25°F) and 149°C (300°F) are commonly perceived as the most at risk from CUI. Hostile CUI has also been seen at the 149°C+ (300°F+) range. With this in mind, safeguarding against CUI is really a matter of making sure there's no water in insulation systems below approximately 177°C (350°F) because the intermittent boiling and flashing that occurs above a metal temperature of 100°C (212°F) produces quite an aggressive CUI environment. Also, consideration must be given to insulated equipment used in more extreme conditions such as sub-zero, tropical, or desert climate conditions. These types of environments are more vulnerable to factors such as moisture and heat. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS Some of the environmental conditions leading to higher CUI rates include: Marine environments Climates with higher rainfall Hot or humid environments Intermittent wet-dry conditions Contaminants from the atmosphere or from the insulation (such as chlorides and sulphides) dissolving in water THE SPACE-RING SYSTEM There are a number of ways to protect against CUI and one of the best is through a revolutionary product produced by Powertherm, called the Space-Ring System.
