Comparing Swing Check Valves and Lift Check Valves

THE PETER SMITH VALVE COMPANY LTD WWW.PETERSMITHVALVE.CO.UK COMPARING SWING CHECK VALVES AND LIFT CHECK VALVES Check valves are used to prevent backflow in piping systems. Generally, the pressure of a fluid passing through a system opens the valve while reversed flow closes it. There are various types of check valve, and here we take a look at two of the most common: Swing Check and Lift Check. Fig. 184SCLW SWING CHECK VALVES OPENED This type of check valve makes use of a hinged disc, that is forced open by flow in the piping system. Should flow be reversed, the disc will return to its seat ring thereby stopping flow from travelling in the opposite direction. Fig. 282 LIFT CHECK VALVES OPENED Instead of a hinged disc, Lift Check valves use a guided piston that moves vertically up and down inside the valve. When there is enough pressure, the piston is lifted, allowing flow to pass through. Again, reverse flow will close the valve, returning it to its lower position. KEY CHECK VALVE FEATURES SWING CHECK LIFT CHECK No power required Dependent on gravity Doesn't slow Good for high down flow pressure service too much Pressure Good for drop is low upward flow The Peter Smith Valve Company Limited are specialists in the design and manufacturing of Swing Check valves and other small to medium high quality valves for the control of fluids and gases in most pipe conveying systems.
