20 Simple Tricks to Help Keep You Focused at Work

OFF 20 SIMPLE TRICKS TO HELP YOU KEEP FOCUSED WHILE AT WORK #1 Get a good sleep Experts recommend you get between 7 - 9 hours sleep every night to help keep you alert and focused throughout the following day. If you struggle to sleep, try setting aside designated time to unwind every night before you go to bed. Eat breakfast #2 Start your day with a breakfast that will provide you with slow-releasing energy to last you through to lunch time. This will help keep you alert and on the ball, whilst also avoiding any distracting hunger pangs. #3 Write down all your ideas Always keep a pen and pad to hand, in case any bright ideas spring to mind whilst you're concentrating on a separate task. This way you can quickly jot down them down to get back to later, allowing you to stay focused on the task at hand in the meantime. TODO LIST Keep a to-do list #4 A great way to stay on top of your workload is to keep a simple to-do list with realistic goals for the day. These daily goals will help keep you motivated and prevent you from getting distracted by less significant matters. #5 Reward yourself It's a great idea to make sure you reward yourself for the jobs you manage to tick off your to-do list. Plan these rewards at the beginning of each day so you have something to work towards, these can be anything as simple as allowing yourself a quick tea or coffee break. Concentrate on one thing at a time #6 Juggling multiple responsibilities at once can be a real skill, but it can also sometimes side-track us, causing us to lose focus on the task at hand. Make sure you manage your time efficiently, and try to ensure that you're giving your full attention to just one job at a time. #7 Prioritize your to-do lists TODO LIST Try prioritising each task on your to-do list, a great way to do this is to schedule the most challenging jobs for the beginning of the day, when you're at your most productive. Set deadlines #8 Giving yourself a deadline for each task is a great way to keep yourself focused and motivated. However, it's important to make sure these deadlines are achievable, to avoid yourself becoming demotivated if you don't manage to get it all done. #9 Organize your work environment In order to focus your thoughts, your work space should reflect the same clarity you hope to achieve in your mind. Keep your desk clutter-free, with only the essentials that you'll need on a daily basis kept to hand. Take small breaks #10 As hard as we might try, no one can concentrate at their maximum capacity for an entire day straight, and this is why it's important to ensure that you take small breaks throughout the day, to refresh and refocus your mind. #11 Turn off notifications We all know how distracting a flashing phone can be when we're trying to concentrate. Help yourself focus by disabling personal notifications, and try to get in the habit of only checking your phone intermittently, perhaps in your allocated break times. OFF Block out distractions #12 In most offices, it can be hard to avoid distracting background noise and chatter. If this is a problem for you, try to block out the noise using calming music. Alternatively, there are various apps which provide neutral background noise such as rain or waves, to drown out all other sounds without distracting you from your work. #13 Drink more water When your concentration is starting to waver at work, water can help refresh your mind, and rid the first signs of distracting feelings such as fatigue or hunger. Try to ensure you always keep a supply of water to hand at your desk to keep hydrated throughout the day. Exercise #14 Setting aside some time each day to move around and get some exercise can significantly improve your ability to focus. Exercise can help clear your mind, as well as triggering endorphins which improve the prioritising functions of our brain. This helps to block out distractions and improve concentration. #15 Fresh air Allowing yourself a period of fresh air and sunlight every day will work wonders for your ability to focus, particularly if you work in a dark or stuffy office environment. These conditions will often encourage lethargy, but daylight and fresh air will help reduce stress and clear your mind. Keep healthy snacks nearby #16 When those hunger pangs kick in, it can very easily break your concentration. Try to keep a supply of healthy snacks at your desk so you can easily satisfy these cravings without letting them distract you from your work. # 17 Organise your emails and only check at intervals An unexpected email can easily break our focus and draw us away from the work we should be concentrating on. Make a habit of organising your emails at the beginning of the day, and try not to look at them again until a few hours later, once you've checked a few items off your to-do list. Sorry i have to go but will catch up with you later, Ok Bye! Keep phone calls short and concise #18 Phone calls can often consume a lot more time than you realise, so try to keep them as concise as possible, and avoid taking any calls which aren't actually necessary. #19 Practice good posture Good posture in the workplace can provide a myriad of benefits including reduced fatigue and increased concentration and mental performance. Make sure you're using a chair which supports your lower back, and ensure that your line of vision is perpendicular to your monitor. Be interested and passionate about your work #20 MY Most importantly, if you want to stay focused, it's important to stay interested. Having a passion for what you're doing, and always working with a set purpose in mind is the best way to ensure you stay focused on every job you undertake.
