CANADA AND THE OLYMPICS 1900 Canadian athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games since 1900 except the 1980 Summer Olympics which they boycotted. 1980 2012 BOYCOTT! The top three events that Canadians have won gold medals in are athletics, rowing, and swimming. 99 58 109 THE BEGINNING - CIRCA 1900 The Summer Olympics in Paris were the first Olympics at which a Canadian athlete participated. Two Canadians entered, though national teams as they are now were not introduced until later Olympics. Canada's Olympians were George Orton and Ronald J. MacDonald. Orton was the first Canadian to win a medal, finishing first in the 2500 metre steeplechase. He later finished third in the 400 metre hurdles and fifth in the 4000 metre steeplechase.
